Fresh burger meat is typically the ideal option for grilling but there are times when there is no other option other than for you to grill the burgers when they’re still frozen. If you’re in a hurry or lack the fridge space to thaw frozen burgers, you can grill the patties directly out of the freezer.

The frozen meat patties are usually packed in stacks. And it could be a hassle trying to separate them without de-frozening them. Making hamburgers is much easier with frozen patties.

How To Grill Frozen Burgers

It’s safe to grill frozen burgers without thawing ahead of time — but, they will take about twice as long to cook.

The grilling of frozen burgers isn’t much different from grilling them once they’ve been frozen. The most difficult part could be the separation of the patties while they’re frozen. Thawing for a couple of minutes may make splitting easier and will help the salt and pepper stick.

For this, employ a sturdy spatula or a butter knife to pry the burgers apart before preparing them to grill.

However, sometimes, if haven’t taken the time to thaw frozen burger patties and if you’re in need of something at the last minute then throw the frozen hamburger patty onto the hot grill and you’ll enjoy delicious burgers in no time!

How to grill frozen burgers?

There is no exact answer for how long to cook frozen burgers on grill, as grills are always different, especially if you use charcoal. Gas is more reliable, but the timing can vary based on the overall dimension of the grill. These will cause the cooking time somewhat different. It is generally possible to be expecting cooked perfect burgers (at moderate size, thickness, and in size) to take around 20 minutes in total.

How to cook frozen burger patties on the grill?

Step 1

If you are using the gas grill, turn the grill to medium heat. If you’re using a charcoal grill, light the coals, and let the coals ignite until they turn white or red hot.

Be sure that the grill is clean prior to firing it up! The accumulation of food particles could cause food items to become stuck and impart an unpleasant flavor to the dish you’re cooking.

If you did not clean your grill grates the last time you used them, it’s likely to have food scraps from your past on it. So, I prefer to allow the grill to heat on and then wash the cooking grates prior to putting on the burger patties. It is possible to use the grill scraper that you prefer for this.

Step 2

After the grill is cleaned and ready for use It’s now time to prepare it to begin grilling.

Keep preventing the burger patties from sticking to the grill grate. To prevent them from sticking to the grill grate, heat the grill.

Prepare your gas grill to about 325 degrees.

After your grill is ready (usually three to four minutes) place the beef hamburger patties on. They can be placed directly on the grill straight from your freezer. You can also put them in direct heat right away.

Step 3

Shut off your grill lid and allow to cook in the beginning for about 5 minutes. Lift the lid and turn frozen patties. At this point, I prefer to add seasoning to both sides of the patties, which will allow the spices to soak into the beef more deeply. I think you should season frozen burgers on both sides of your choice. Close the lid when the patties have been turned.

Step 4

Cook with the lid shut for another 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes of grilling on the other side, the time is now to put on the cheese slices. This is also the ideal time for you to check the internal temperature. The FDA suggests cooking fresh meat ground beef to a safe internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

If it is lower than 160 degrees, turn the patties then continue to cook until they reach 160 degrees before adding cheese.

Step 5

Next, flip the patty again and add cheese to your burger patty. Cover the lid and cook for another 3 minutes or until the cheese melts (note that if you’re adding cheese then flip it over and cook for another three minutes). After 3 minutes of grilling the frozen patties should be deemed “medium“.

If you like your burgers cooked to perfection, cook for 5 additional minutes instead of just three minutes. You can add the cheese after you’ve got about three minutes of grilling time remaining.

Step 6

If you’re cooking and the grill continues to heat, throw the hamburger buns on to give them a toasty light. For this, apply melted butter on the flat edge of the bun before you put them onto the grill. Make sure they toast at a medium heat grill temperature so as to prevent burning them.

After you’ve got your burger patties cooked and the hamburger buns are toasted, you’re now ready to build the burger to your taste.

Step 7

Remove the burger from the grill and take a bite!

Some tips on how best to grill frozen burgers

If the burgers are frozen it is recommended that you flip your patties every five minutes or so to ensure even grilling to ensure that the opposite side isn’t burned until fully thawed.

Cook burger for approximately 20 mins (flipping at least every five minutes) and cook until juices are clear.

While it may be tempting, don’t try to press down the patties as they cook time.

If you’re purchasing frozen patties ready to be packaged you need to choose patties without fillers.

The best way to cook burgers is to place them on top of direct heat, just be aware that this can result in flare-ups, as the juices begin to thaw and run down the grill grate.

If your grill is on grass, you can place a grill mat under the grill. It will protect the lawn from dripping grease from the grill.

When the burgers attain a safe internal temp of 161deg by using the help of a meat thermometer, they’re safe to consume. They’ll be brown, in place of the raw “red” color.

If you’d like, place patties on hamburger buns with your favorite toppings and conquer that burger desire! You can also go wild and serve your juicy burger patties on donuts or use waffles as the buns!

Do not forget to turn the gas valve off for your grill!

It is possible to adhere to the identical grilling procedure, but be careful as the thickness of your burger could differ. The thickness of the frozen patties affects how long to grill frozen burgers. To get the best results, you must be attentive while burgers cook but you should be capable of cooking the majority of patties from frozen on the grill too.

Can you eat frozen burgers medium rare?

It isn’t safe to consume frozen burgers moderately rare because they were frozen in the process of preparation. The frozen burgers are best cooked until the internal temperature of 160 degrees.

If you consume frozen burgers cooked to medium-rare, then you’re placing yourself at risk of contracting food poisoning because the meat will be undercooked, especially if you like thicker burgers.
